Overview:
Decorah’s Song and Dream Travelers are two large-scale bronze sculptures installed at the Decorah Fish Hatchery. Created by artist Doug Freeman, the works form a cohesive installation that enhances the hatchery as both a functional site and a cultural destination. Positioned within a landscape already valued for its natural and ecological significance, the sculptures add a visual and experiential dimension for visitors.

Story of the Commission:
The sculptures were commissioned by the Friends of Decorah Fish Hatchery (FDFH), a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving and enriching the hatchery grounds. Initial discussions with the artist began around 2013, with the completed works installed in December 2020. The project was funded through private donations and contributions from hatchery visitors, including proceeds from on-site fish food sales, and did not rely on state funding.

Installation and Public Life Today:
Since their installation, Decorah’s Song and Dream Travelers have become integral to the visitor experience at the hatchery. Located near the Trout Run Trail, the sculptures contribute to the site’s role as a destination for both recreation and reflection, engaging a wide audience and encouraging interaction with the surrounding environment.
