All artwork created by Douglas Freeman is protected under United States and international copyright laws, as well as the United States Visual Artists Rights Act (VARA) 17 U.S.C. §106A.
Ownership of Artwork
When you purchase a piece of artwork, you are purchasing the physical item only, not the copyright.
Douglas Freeman retains full copyright, which includes his exclusive rights to (1) make reproductions of the artwork, (2) make derivatives of the work, (3) publicly display the artwork and/or copies and derivatives, and (4) distribute such copies and derivatives. Douglas Freeman also retains all his VARA rights to protect the integrity of his artwork and enforce the proper attribution for his work.
Permitted Use
Collectors may photograph and make derivative copies of the artwork, and distribute such photographs and derivative items, only for personal, non-commercial purposes, provided that proper credit is given where practicable to Doug Freeman.
Collectors also may lend the artwork, including photographs of the work, to museums, libraries, schools and other governmental or nonprofit entities for proposes of public exhibition, education, websites and catalogs.
