Overview

Shichifukujin – The Seven Lucky Gods features seven life-size bronze sculptures representing the traditional Japanese deities associated with good fortune and prosperity.

Story of the Commission

The project was commissioned by the Tokyo Department of Housing and Urban Development through the architectural firm Yendo Associates as part of the development of Akabane Plaza.

Concept

Freeman approached the traditional figures with a contemporary sculptural language while honoring their cultural significance. Each figure represents one of the Lucky Gods associated with happiness, longevity, and prosperity.

Design Process

The sculptures were modeled in clay before being cast in bronze. Freeman worked closely with the architectural team to ensure the sculptures integrated naturally into the plaza environment.

Installation and Public Life Today

The sculptures are installed throughout Akabane Plaza where visitors encounter them as part of the everyday life of the neighborhood.
